Phoenix Arising - The Album

Alan talks about his contribution to the album and his musical influences:

Q
What led you to providing spanish (acoustic) guitar parts for the first track (Spanish Storm)?
A
I was following orders.

Q
Which came first - the guitar parts or the title of the track?
A
Pass. I don't remember 'Spanish' being there before I'd played the 'classical' guitar parts. I believe the working title was, 'look at that f**king weather'. I could be wrong...

Q
Haha! My understanding is that the title was changed after you recorded the acoustic parts. I understood that you had been taking Spanish guitar lessons prior to the reunion. Is that correct?
A
Not me - must've been the other fellah. I took 'classical' lessons.
(This is fun!)

Q
Classical? Spanish? Are they different?
A
Very. But, yes - there were a couple of pieces by Spanish composers that I liked. I've always had a soft spot for their scales.
(Did you know that butterflies, and presumably moths, have scales?)

Q
Do you have any recollections of any difficulties with the recording process?.
A
It was new territory to me - I'd never been in such an environment before. Enormous pressures and the wrath of gods. Thankfully, Steve supplied beer.

Q
Did you cause Steve any headaches?
A
Headaches, by definition,  probably...

Q
Some tracks demonstrate a "call and response" approach to interacting with the keyboards. Is this something you knowingly pursued?
A
I tried to stop him. Honestly I did. But, you know Steve...
No, it was more akin to... one for me, one for you, here we go together !

Q
Who influenced your guitar style? Anyone particular with regard to the EM crossover?
A
Re. EM Crossover - no-one.
Guitar influences: Jan Akkerman, Deke Leonard/Micky Jones, Ritchie Blackmore, Pat Metheny, Rory Gallagher,  Al di Meola.

Q
Any further thoughts?
A
For being just a small part of this, my gratitude goes out to Steve Smith (aka 37, Smiffy and Prisoner 785243) for having cojones big enough to ask Les and I to join him on the journey.
Thanks also go out to Les, for his voice of reason (‘fancy a curry?’) and Ann for encouraging me to start playing again.
